Tentoonstelling Ambassade van de Noordzee in Het HEM
Kunstenaars Frank Bloem, Valerie van Leersum, Carmen Schabracq, Stef Veldhuis en Axel Coumans doen in samenwerking met de Ambassade van de Noordzee onderzoek naar de kleuren, geuren en geluiden van de zee. In Het HEM presenteren zij de uitkomsten van hun onderzoek naar de stemmen uit het Antropoceen.

Ruiken naar de zee
Geurontwerper Frank Bloem doet onderzoek naar de geuren van de zee en maakt een archief van veertig zee-geuren. Want we willen weten wat de geuren zijn die maken dat de Noordzee ruikt zoals zij ruikt. Welk zeeleven draagt daaraan bij? Wat doen geuren als teer, stookolie of diesel met dit parfum en wat doet dit met ons? Frank Bloem struint voor zijn onderzoek langs de kust en gaat mee met vissers en onderzoekers om verschillende geurmonsters te verzamelen en te vertalen in een draagbare geurset.
Valerie van Leersum
De kleur van de Noordzee
Kunstenaar Valerie van Leersum doet onderzoek naar de kleuren van de zee. De kleurschakeringen van de zee veranderen voortdurend, afhankelijk van de concentratie algen en andere zwevende deeltjes. Om deze in kaart te brengen beroept Valerie zich op kleurindexen zoals de Forel-Ule schaal en Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours (1814), een boek dat ook door Darwin werd gebruikt. Voor haar onderzoek nodigt ze daarnaast mensen uit op het strand om nieuwe kleurkaarten samen te stellen, gebaseerd op zintuiglijke waarnemingen van de zee. Uiteindelijk ontstaat er een kleurwaaier waarin de kleuren van de zee worden gekoppeld aan persoonlijke belevenissen.
Carmen Schabracq
De Zeemond
Kunstenaar Carmen Schabracq ontwierp en bouwde in opdracht van de Ambassade een grote sculpturale installatie: De Zeemond – een instrument dat de geluiden van de zee voor mensenoren vertaalt. Het concept ontwikkelde zij in samenwerking met geluidskunstenaar en ontwerper Harpo ’t Hart. De Zeemond heeft de vorm van een otoliet, een gehoorbeentje dat mensen en vissen gemeenschappelijk hebben. Houd je je oor tegen de klankkast dan kun je misschien nog de onderwater stemmen van de Noordzee horen.

Sound of the North Sea

Componist Stef Veldhuis maakt muziekcomposities met data, gemeten in de Noordzee. Door metingen van de temperatuur en kabeljauwpopulatie te koppelen aan specifieke muzikale elementen brengt hij een samenwerkingsvorm tussen mens en natuur tot stand. Sound of the North Sea bestaat uit twee delen. Het eerste deel verklankt de patronen op het strand die het water achterlaat, het tweede deel is gebaseerd op het weefsel van golven en deining. De enige manier om de installatie te ervaren is in het water. Streaming Sandwaves Project (SSP)
De zee is altijd in wisselwerking met de kust, de golven altijd in gesprek met het zand. Deze oneindige dialoog tracht Axel Coumans om te zetten naar een taal die tot nog toe niet gehoord kon worden. Wanneer het getij terugtrekt, blijft er een rimpelige afdruk achter in het zand. Streaming Sandwaves Project (SSP) is een instrument dat dit ingewikkelde patroon scant en omzet in hoorbare geluidsgolven.

Exhibition Embassy of the North Sea at Het HEM
Artists Frank Bloem, Axel Coumans, Valerie van Leersum, Carmen Schabracq and Stef Veldhuis are conducting research in collaboration with the Embassy of the North Sea into the colours, smells and sounds of the sea. At Het HEM they present the results of their research into the voices from the Anthropocene.

Smell to the sea
Fragrance designer Frank Bloem conducts research into the smells of the sea, creating an archive of 40 sea scents to learn what makes the North Sea smell the way it does. What sea life contributes to this? What do scents like tar, oil or diesel do to this perfume, and what does it do to us? Frank Bloem travels along the coast and meets with fishermen and researchers to collect various odour samples before translating them into a portable fragrance set.
Valerie van Leersum
The colour of the North Sea
Artist Valerie van Leersum researches the colours of the sea. These are constantly changing depending on the concentration of algae and other suspended particles. To map these, van Leersum relies on colour indices such as the Forel-Ule scale and Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours (1814), a book also used by Darwin. She invites people on a beach to compile new colour charts based on sensory perceptions of the sea, eventually creating a chart in which the colours of the sea are linked to personal experiences.

De Zeemond [Mouth of the Sea]
Artist Carmen Schabracq’s De Zeemond is a large sculptural installation designed and built to translate the sounds of the sea for human ears. Developed in collaboration with sound artist and designer Harpo ’t Hart, De Zeemond takes the shape of an otolite, a bone that people and fish have in common. Hold your ear against the sound box and maybe you can still hear the voices from live underwater in the North Sea.

Kneel before the tank and close your eyes – listen to the sounds that surround you – breath in deeply – dive in.
Composer Stef Veldhuis creates compositions by using data measured in the North Sea. By connecting musical elements to cod population and sea temperature data, Veldhuis ensures that both actors, nature and man, have equal input. Sound of the North Sea consists of two parts; the first draws inspiration from the sand patterns that water leaves behind when returning to the sea. The second part is based on the intermingling pattern of waves and swell. The only way to hear this piece of music is in the water. Streaming Sandwaves Project (SSP)
The sea is always interacting with the coast, the waves always in conversation with the sand. Axel Coumans converts this infinite dialogue into a language that until now could not be heard. When the tide recedes, a ripple print remains in the sand, and the Streaming Sandwaves Project (SSP) scans this complex pattern and converts it into audible sound.
